Mask-Making Party at Sharon & Matt's - 13DEC03

Matt and Sharon had some people over to construct masks for themselves - Sharon had recently attended a mask-making class. Hippie-ass spirituality/group therapy aside, it was highly informative and entertaining for her, and she decided to share all this with us! Matt and Sharon taught us how to apply plaster-coated gauze (called plaster-craft) to someone's face - border first, then inside, then two more layers of the same. After that it was up to the individual to determine what the mask would look like. I spent about ten hours at their place today, making my mask, eating pizza, hanging out and chatting, even peeling away for a little nap.

While initially some people were completely stumped for ideas as to what kind of masks they should make, nearly everyone was surprised (and sometimes alarmed) at the creativity that poured out of themselves, or the underlying messages that lurked within them, finally finding a voice in this surreal activity. It was a real learning experience all the way around.

Me with my mask, about to peel it off. Sharon models her new winter coat! Allison lies helpless beneath a mask of plaster and gauze. Matt applies some precise touch-ups to her mouth.
Two more junior maskmakers begin the process. Mel grins at a joke her friend made. Sharon is delighted with her new scarf! Two men getting two women plastered in the basement.
The entire worktable, busy at their tasks. Matt leads Allison up the stairs, mischief in his eyes. And now, the waiting game as the plaster-craft dries... February and Jillian show up, also ready for this kind of fun.
Matt pauses and thinks about his strategy. Todd... well, drinks something. My mask, resting on the table. Well? Does it look like her?
Febbi begins the process. Sharon carefully applies plaster-craft all over her face.
What's cute is she blinks whenever she sees the camera flash through her eyelids. Tedious but rewarding, the process is fun for all involved. The face is coated in olive oil and grapeseed oil before the plaster is applied. Matt's taking pictures too, which he finds hilarious.
Very patient little girl! Allison cleanses the last traces of plaster from her skin. Dasha perches on the couch, somehow threateningly.
Todd's off to have a smoke and do some shopping. The shoes of guests do tend to accumulate. Sharon does the last few touches to Febbi's mask. Febbi gets to walk around while her mask dries.
She's going to be a cat! Too cute! Joe looks creepy beside his own mask. Beth tests out the preliminary shape of her mask.
Big pile o' craft supplies at our disposal. Aimee, fresh from getting plastered, with Savannah in tow. Matt makes arrangements for pizza. The accelerated drying process occurs in the oven.
Kinda creepy, to take off your face and put it in an oven... Sharon trims off more plaster-craft for use. Athenais receives the treatment at Jesse's hands. So careful with that finely sculpted nose...
Those eyes are telling him to chase the cameraman off. Snipping plaster-craft into more manageable pieces. Mike demonstrates, you can even form the mask around your own glasses!
Class in the midst of mess. Seasonal window decorations.
The tree and a star in the foyer. Ribbon about a lamp in the living room. The ledge is lined with pinecones! There's a closet and a coatrack, you know...
Scott and Caly arrive in an action-shot. They also pose real nice. And what do you think of the activities, Mr. Gargoyle? More festive decorations after a fashion.
Todd does not enjoy crowds. He contemplates violence. The sword collection in the study. Sharon takes her turn holding Savannah. Jesse has the option of his mask going over his whole head.
He worked at Gizmonics Institute / Just another face in a blue jumpsuit... Caly pauses to reflect... Scott refines the shape of his mask. Did you know that Mountain Dew boxes make the best horns? They do.
Oh, he's gonna be the bad guy from Dungeons " Dragons, the cartoon! Oh yeah, pizza's here! Joe gets a slice of the Athena! Scott grabs the garlic and potato! Video collection, upstairs.
Craftsmen take a pizza break. Caly and Joe, busily channeling their creativity. Scott and Allison permit the muses to work through their hands.
Everyone else chills out in the kitchen. Lynne in a thoughtful moment. Mike's get more and more elaborate... Joe displays his creation.
The pearlescent qualities of the fabric are under deliberation. Bedroom window, upstairs.
Beth, Caly, and Allison are lost to the creative urge. Scott wasn't expectin' no back-talk from his own mask... That must've been one creepy-assed Mardi Gras... I model my own reluctant creation.
They all said you couldn't use a glue gun like this! Well? Does it look like her now?
