Evening at Lake Calhoun and Uptown - 09OCT03

Huh, I guess these pages are turning into my photo-journal. I guess that's okay too. Be warned: most of the pictures below are hi-res, large pictures that will take some time to download even with a DSL/cable connection. I've coded them to open up in another window, though, so you could conceivably set half a dozen to open and download, then go and make yourself a snack or use the bathroom or maybe catch a little nap.

Here's Where It Gets Redundant: I couldn't find my stupid owner's manual for my camera anywhere so I decided tonight I would just dink around with the settings and figure everything out. And that worked, actually, I found where the timer is so I can run out in front of the picture and pose. Oh, how I pose. But I also got the wild hair up my ass to try to ask other people, complete strangers, to pose or allow me to take their picture. No one declined, except maybe the Japanese girl who didn't speak English, but... I hate the awkward pause as they stare at you and try to figure out what it is you really want and weigh their options and kinda want to go on with their own thing but can't immediately see any harm in posing for a picture and would it be too awkward to say no, etc. And then I apologize and thank them for their cooperation, and then I realize I'm going overboard with that and probably really freaking them out... I'm sticking to trees, lights, and the moon. I'm not a person-photographer at all. The moon's enough for me. Fallen leaves on the sidewalk, that's all I need.

6:30pm; used flash. Finally leaving the apartment.

Blurry shot facing south on Bryant Ave.S., in front of my building.

First volunteer! I caught him leaving and asked him to pose here.

Ugh, blurry and low-light exposure. Felt stupid.

Warehouse along the 29th St. bike trail.

Close-up and BLURRY! Dammit.

Asked a jogger to run by as I took a picture; camera was focusing and balancing as she ran past. Dammit.

Used tripod for 3rd volunteer - she couldn't hold still 'cos she was panting. I felt stupid for interrupting.

LANDSCAPE. Landscape is not embarrassing. I don't have to explain myself to landscape. I don't stammer for landscape.

Evening skyline behind a squadron of ducks. I think they come in squadrons... I think squirrels are platoons.

Mo' buildings, mo' ducks. Mo' redundancy. This is really just for me rather than anyone else...

More ducks. You may not believe it, but I actually did delete some pictures from this batch...

Moon over Mpls.; low-light on tripod.

Wanted to see the effect of moon on the other side. Eh.

I can't get enough of Minneapolis' pretty lights.

Mpls., lower resolution... no less love.

First self-portrait; flash and low-light. I moved before the exposure was done catching all the light. I look insubstantial.

Long, tall shot of Mill City.

Self-portrait, only I forgot the stupid flash.

Oh yes, look at me pose. Joggers got an eyeful too. Some muttered amongst themselves as to whether they should help.

Q: What looks like the evening sun at 7:30pm?
A: We Are DEVO. The moon with prolonged exposure!

I'm, uh... still trying to figure out where to stand. I think this is where I lost my bike lock, incidentally.

Oh yeah, it looks so golden because it's sepiatone and low-light. I find it interesting.

Black-and-white makes me look not like me; moving during a timed low-light shot makes me look like I'm standing in front of a backdrop. I promise you I was really at the lake.

...Ah, so that's what Solarize does. I look like MTV circa 1982: I'm a Donny Iris video!

B/W, full moon over the lake, extremely expensive houses in the perimeter.

I cheated, here: this is just a crop from a larger, uninteresting picture. I've enlarged the Hunter's Moon twice for the new image.

Close-up, low-light, solarize Minneapolis. Now I hear Dan Hartman's hit from Streets of Fire.

Started biking home, saw this scene, had to set up again and futz with it.

Lower left: you can just see the Uptown Theater's sign standing tall.

Dunno if it's better in B/W.

Tight shot of the docks that lead up to Lake Street and eastward into the heart of Uptown. I love this city.

My favorite shot of the set: I love how the tree frames the moon, and the glimpse of moored boats in the reflection.

Close-up for details everywhere. This was worth the entire evening, maybe worth losing my stupid bike lock.

Sepiatone - what kind of pretentious artmonger would I be if I didn't use the sepia effect; what kind, indeed.

B/W, low-light. Does it look like Casablanca? Note the glower of traffic, lower left. I like it.

And what spazzy beginner's photo session is complete without more solarization?

Leaves on the sidewalk in front of Music-Go-Round on Lake St.; I deleted another one just like this but without the flash, only low-light. Colors were slightly less vibrant.

Dying plants by the sidewalk, northbound on Lyndale Ave. around 24th or 25th Street. They looked yellower at the time...

The steps to my building. I love fallen leaves.

The final volunteer for the final shot of the night - it's more than time to pack it in and go home.
