Here's an interesting little phenomenon that's been emerging into consciousness lately. Of course it's previously existed in various artist/oekaki forums, but I mean that when multiple friends of mine start alluding to something, friends who don't know each other, then I understand that to mean that X trend is on the rise and will soon become more popularly known. So maybe in a year everyone and their uncle will produce oekaki and message boards to feature them.
PaintBBS and various "Oekaki"-titled programs are what the kids are using. Oekaki is Japanese for "doodle" or "scribble". That's what these people are doing: using a simplistic graphics program to create their illustrations. Of course, they're pushing the envelope to staggering heights and creating some really fantastic work. I might practice with this program but I'm immediately outclassed by these other, more dedicated and better talented artists who command a deep and rich mastery of this silly little program.
- bevil696 - My friend Natsuko/"KiKi"'s newest homepage; click on the "drawing message board" link. The program she uses is very sophisticated and offers a satisfying array of options!
- Chu's oekaki - This is where an acquaintance posts a lot of her original work. The host site itself is Oekakies.com.
- GH Drawing Board - A long time ago I found this drawing program (last link on the page, above the ad banner; 2nd to last link is the BBS gallery) and it's pretty fun to use. As you can see, other people are much better at it than I am.
- Keiti BBS - I think "Keiti" is just the name of the guy running this site. Go ahead and click on the BBS link at the top to see the pictures.
- KiKi's works - Gallery belonging to my friend Natsuko. The two links below "PBBS" are galleries of her oekaki work.
- Huh! Evidently Natsuko also posts her work on Oekakies.com, too!
- Noir City BBS - More American kids who wish they were Japanese artists but still lapse occasionally into hackneyed inner-city slang. Still, there is a lot of skill here.
- OekakiBBS - Very elaborate BBS with many subcategories in diverse and specific areas of interest. Great place to find assloads of artists' personal websites. (Very obvious English version is offered at top of menu on left.)
- Oekaki Circle - They provide the same drawing program as the BBS KiKi frequents: a group of American Japanese-fetishists, I think they're using more sophisticated programs to create their illustrations, going beyond the bounds of the purist oekaki format.
- Oekaki FAQ from OekakiCentral.com - A good place to start. If you can get past their self-elitism and Festie little grading system, there's some useful information in here and good links, not to mention really good artwork. They do cross-cultural no-no's like referring to themselves as "-chan" and typical American misuse of the word "otaku", but they mean well.
- Oekaki.net - An actual Japanese-based site, not just a Japanese-fetish site. Best viewed through Babelfish for ignorant gaijin like me.
- The Original Oekaki Potato - Huh, apparently there's some kind of competition for the title "Oekaki Potato". See what a large world it is, kids? See how many trivialities roiling about like a battle between ant colonies, of which you were previously unaware?
- Portal Graphics - Professional-grade artists mill about here, displaying their advanced abilities; there really is no inferior work here, everything's impressive. Also, if you poke around you can find some very interesting personal tutorials by several etsablished, accomplished Japanese artists who cover everything from the formulation of ideas to the nuts-and-bolts of their specific craft.
- SHEEBBS I and SHEEBBS II - A pair of German-based oekaki (or testen und doodlen) websites! Now I've seen everything! The artwork's great, and the drawing program is very easy to find on the 2nd site. (Both places are a "training ground" for the German Oekaki.de site.)
- Sho - It's not a drawing program, but via the same concept it's a brushstroke calligraphy program. Once you see the opening animation you'll get it and can play around with it.
What follows is, of course, a small gallery of artists who wholly or in part participate in these myriad oekaki programs and store their work on a personal website. Just dink around and click things until you find all the pictures. It's really interesting to see how much they're able to accomplish with tiny little canvases and simple graphics programs. Obviously they're very talented, driven producers of artwork, and I think the capability of graphic control changes from site to site. Still, just going through all their personal pages and ocmparing the results can be fascinating indeed.
