Okay, as with most issues, I can see both sides of this but I lean heavily in one direction, because the other direction gets spun out to unrealistic proportions.
On the one hand, yes, I like PC. I like that other ethnicities can be regarded as humans instead of sophisticated animals. I like that telling racist/sexist jokes is frowned upon. I like that women are treated like individuals instead of property. I don't think that's bad.
On the other hand, PC seems to make some people fucking stupid. Really, they've regressed into emotionally-fragile retards. I went to a movie tonight in a series of international films, and it attracted a lot of earth-mother-worship-tree-huggy-veg*n-starving-artist-neo-pagan-global-village types. Oh yes, they're so open-minded: look at their jaundiced skin, so open-minded for giving up meat but failing to supplement their diet adequately; look at how they wear clothes and shop for art from other cultures, the divine right of the conquering tribe (wouldn't that give them a heart attack to realize!). But tonight they were so, so disturbed that the movie they wanted to see was being replaced with another! Oh, what shock! Despite posters and flyers being taped up all outside the theater, it wasn't what their printed schedules said! So fragile, so inflexible, so unable to take things in stride.
That comes from a life of oversensitivity. They spend so much time searching for infractions in conversation and advertising, scrapping to pick a self-righteous fight on behalf of those poor, undereducated and disenfranchised minorities who can't defend themselves, senses so heightened to innuendo and shades of offense, that now their emotional topography is rendered completely inoperable. Their nerves are brittle and crystallized with fear of accidentally saying something that might be interpreted as offensive to someone somewhere, and now they lack the flexibility to adapt to minor changing circumstances. I can understand some disappointment in hoping to show up for one movie, but is it necessary to halt the showing of the film so you can ask stupid fucking questions about where the film is now, and why wasn't this announced better (I take it they want schedules in large LCD tablets that can update themselves, since their sophisticated worldview can't seem to accommode a poster on a wall advising them of belated changes and explanations as to these changes) and interrupt everyone else's viewing because you need to register your displeasure about the Greek film being shown instead of the Spanish film? Oh man, what I wouldn't have given to have been an oppressed Greek in that theater, righteously lighting them up in their insensitivity, and they'd have to take it! Because as the cultural majority they have to atone for all sorts of bullshit! Hell, I could've pretended to be Lithuanian and just made something up! Why wasn't I thinking faster...
I don't think I'm insensitive. My friend cries, I'm concerned. Someone cracks a crude racist joke, I wince and gently correct them or firmly advise them to shut the fuck up. That doesn't mean my humor isn't sometimes harsh, sometimes assholish. That doesn't mean I dress like I come from three different countries (since when does "embracing diversity" mean homogeniety and the ensuant death of the very differences that make us unique and interesting?). While some people don't think I censor myself sufficiently, actually I do. I know my audience pretty well, I know what I may and mayn't say around friends. I don't need to say "nigga" to feel liberated and truly free, just because it's commonly used in inner city culture, I'm fine enough without it. I don't have to hold my breath until I hear someone kindasorta say something that could be reinterpreted as offensive to some vague stereotype somewhere in the world. Why isn't that presumptuousness as insulting as racism itself? Forcing people into ugly stereotypes and presuming to act on their behalf is as offensive as acting against them, or it should be. And sure, they'll make signs and march up and down in front of whatever governmental institution, screeching and whining to the best of their ability; but how many of them have written their congress person? Fuck, how many of them have even made a sandwich for the starving, drunk Somali guy who used to be a respected physician in his home country?
To sum up: Fuck you, P.C. Choke on it.
