Strictly dress-down: dress up at your own risk in the face of fire, BBQ sauces, exploding sausages, eruptions of martial violence, and cold weather. This is a profoundly casual event with no pretentions to anything classy, elegant, or of status. If you would lounge around in it at home, you can wear it here. ...Within reason, of course; no nudity.
Fires start at 8pm or when first person shows up, whichever's later, and the window for cooking opens shortly thereafter; we eat, we drink, we hang out. The first Friday of every month, we may go out to see Hong Kong movies now that they're showing them again.
Bring your own drinks and whatever you'd like to grill: I've got numerous volumes on grilling techniques and recipies, and most attendees have plenty of opinions or good guesses.
The strictly-vegetarian grill policy is dependent upon the host of the Remote KFG! You can usually wrap your food up in foil, which we'll have plenty of, likely.
I must iterate: KFG is not an open-invite event. This is my private dinner, I'm grilling my meal and I've invited certain friends to come over and hang out. If you want to bring friends over, you have to check with me first; if you've not been invited but want to attend, go ahead and ask me but don't get your feelings hurt if I deny your request. It doesn't mean I dislike you, it just means I would be uncomfortable having you at this particular gathering.
12DEC03 - KUNG-FU GRILLING has ended; tonight was the terminus. Thanks to everyone who participated, you have my gratitude. This site will continue as a personal cooking journal and resource.
24SEP03 - The next major update on this site is the addition of the Gallery of Events page. I'll try to remember my camera for these events (regardless of whether anything actually happens or not) and everyone around the world will wish they were us in vibrant color!
05AUG03 - KFG cannot be held at my new apartment, but other attendees have taken up the slack and are more than happy to host it at their places. This is wonderful news! I'm glad people like the event night enough to perpetuate it like this.
14JUL03 - Moving again, this time to an apartment where I won't be able to host grillings. However, we have two options: there's a park in the area where we could probably hold occasional dinners, and we can also institute Remote KFGs hosted at various generous attendees houses. Share the wealth! If paper plates and empty soda cans are "wealth".
16MAY03 - AMA has started showing their movies again, the first Friday of every month. Prepare for this: soon I'll get that all updated to the events calendar.
13MAR03 - Sorry about the lateness of it: finally updated the map/directions page to reflect the new location. Now you can see for yourself how relatively easier it is to find me, and what a cool part of town I live in now. I live across Lake St. from a grocery store! Talk about convenience!
24FEB03 - Updated the Cast page with four new faces - our numbers are expanding, and moving to the new location (yes, KFG will continue unabated) will not hurt this in the least.
01FEB03 - I'm evicted from my double bungalow (due to no fault of my own) and have to move across the city. Kung-Fu Grilling may not survive the transition.
15DEC02 - Strange problem with the GrillJournal: the code of each page, when I opened it in Dreamweaver, was interspersed with long lines of Chinese characters, though this had no visible effect when browsing the pages. However, it was possible to View Source on each page and get clean code, so I cut-n-pasted that into the pages themselves and now it's fine. Moreover, I cleaned up the entries for consistency's sake.
14DEC02 - Organizing the place: finally added the Cast of KFG; created a recipes page; also moved the map/directions and movie schedule to their own pages, and altered various graphics on the site in slight, unnoticeable ways, important only to me.
13DEC02 - I've restarted the GrillJournal, going back a couple weeks and recording the last four grillings, because I think it's actually getting interesting again. You'll see what I mean when you read it.
18OCT02 - Yes, sadly, as of the last Friday of December, there are no more midnight Hong Kong movies at Riverview Theater; rather, HK cinema will be shown at Metro State in St. Paul on Fridays, 7:30pm, or at Oak Street Cinema in Stadium Village on Saturdays, 11am. For obvious reasons I can't attend either of those. Now the gameplan is for people to bring their own HK selections and show them for grilling. I certainly intend to expand my own collection.
